What is Ayurvedic Medicine?

Ayurvedic Medicine was developed in India over 5,000 years ago and is based on the principles of healing the entire body, not just one ailment at a time. One of the main components is using herbal medicine instead of prescription drugs, to help keep the body balanced.

The word Ayurveda itself means “science of life” in Sanskrit. There are 3 doshas that are the basis for the structure of Ayurveda, Vata, Pitta, Kapha. Vata relates to the mind and creativity and is the energy that is affected by stress and fear. Pitta deals with digestion, absorption of nutrients, and nutrition. Kapha is the concept of keeping your cells functioning properly and having a healthy immune system.

The principle idea behind all of these energies is keeping them in perfect balance. Two major areas focused on to achieve this is through regulating your circadian rhythm and easing stress, predominately through diet and plant-based medicines.

Practitioners will often start treatment by deciding which dosha is dominating the persona. The goal is to get all of the doshas in balance, essentially creating harmony between the body and mind. In Ayurvedic Medicine, the body and mind are always related.

Some of the most common ways to regulate the body are through meditation, finding a regular sleep schedule, and eating a diet full of fresh, raw foods that benefit your body.
