The Benefits of Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha root (Withania somnifera, often called Indian ginseng) is a medicinal botanical grown in India that for thousands of years was revered for the many, health-providing benefits of the powders and extracts made from its roots and leaves. In Ayurvedic medicine, Ashwagandha has been used as a daily tonic to help treat such psychological and physical ailments as stress, insomnia, fatigue, cognitive function, exercise recovery, inflammation, immune health, blood sugar balance, and cardiovascular health. In the past decade, its use as a dietary supplement has become increasingly popular as a natural way to help reduce stress and as a natural sleep aid. Consumers recognize that daily consumption of Ashwagandha helps enhance well-being and the ability to better cope with stress and other negative consequences of modern lifestyles.

Ashwagandha Possesses Adaptogenic Properties

Ashwagandha’s health-enhancing benefits stem from its adaptogenic properties. Adaptogens are a special group of botanicals that help increase resistance to physical, chemical, and psychological stressors while enhancing balance and homeostasis in the body. Adaptogens are remarkable for providing superior wellness benefits without side effects. This is very much unlike Rx drugs, which are well known to cause harmful side effects.

Ashwagandha Provides Multiple Health Benefits

Because of its adaptogenic properties, the highly purified and standardized Ashwagandha used in Dormiva® and Relaxiva® provides a multitude of health benefits that can contribute to overall wellness. Ashwagandha helps reduce stress while enhancing mood, providing experiential effects that are readily felt by consumers. It provides healthy long-lasting energy while reducing overall fatigue. It also can help promote better sleep and healthy immune function. The tendency for people to overeat unhealthy, calorie-laden comfort foods when they are stressed can lead to weight gain. By helping to reduce stress and associated stress-induced overeating, Ashwagandha also possesses important weight management properties.

Ashwagandha Helps Reduce Cortisol Levels

Ashwagandha’s many health benefits result from powerful bioactive compounds called glycowithanolides that help reduce cortisol levels in the body. When the body is stressed, the adrenal glands increase secretion of cortisol, the stress hormone associated with the “fight or flight” response. Cortisol produces many negative consequences in the body including feelings of anxiety, fatigue, poor memory and concentration, sleeplessness, and weight gain particularly around the abdomen. The glycowithanolide bioactives in Ashwagandha are a type of steroidal lactone that mimics the body’s own stress-reducing, relaxation hormones whose role is to reduce cortisol levels to bring the body back into a balanced state. By reducing cortisol, Ashwagandha can help provide multiple health benefits that counteract cortisol’s deleterious effects.

Clinically Tested Standardized Ashwagandha Extract

Ashwagandha extracts have been studied extensively in both animal models and humans clinical trials, which have demonstrated superior efficacy and safety. Sensoril® is the brand name for Ashwagandha produced by Natreon, Inc. and licensed for use in Dormiva® and Relaxiva®. It is an industry-leading, multi-patented, all natural, standardized extract of Ashwagandha, containing a minimum of 10% Ashwagandha glycowithanolide bioactives. This is the highest level of Ashwagandha bioactives of any nutraceutical available to wellness seekers.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled human clinical trial, the ability of Sensoril® to reverse the negative effects of stress and reduce cortisol levels was demonstrated. Supplementation with the recommended levels of Sensoril® resulted in a 70% reduction in stress and a 24% reduction in cortisol levels in subjects. These subjects also experienced significant reductions in fatigue, sleeplessness, inability to concentrate, memory issues, and other factors associated with a stressed state.
