5 Yoga Poses that Help Reduce Stress

Physical activity is an excellent way to reduce stress on both the body and mind. Yoga is an exercise that is known for its calming and meditative mindset. Even if you are a beginner to the art of yoga, there are several poses that are simple to do, and easy on the body. Try these poses that specifically target tension and help you experience a peaceful state of mind.

Child’s Pose (Balasana): If you’ve ever been in a yoga class, many instructors will offer Child’s Pose as a way to center yourself if you find you are struggling with the more complex moves. It is a calming position where you sit back on your heels and stretch your arms forward. You can use this pose to relax your body and relax your mind, reducing tension and stress you may be harboring.

Corpse Pose (Savasana): Traditionally an ending pose in a yoga class, this form is essentially lying on your back and letting everything go. You focus only on your breathing and can enter a trance-like state where all the problems and worries of your day are far, far away. This state can be enhanced by essential oils or by your instructors calming reminders to focus on yourself.

Easy Pose (Sukhasana): Perhaps one of the most famous meditative poses, this pose can help you focus your breathing and reduce stress on your body. The pose requires you to sit up straight with your legs crossed and your hands gently resting on your knees. As you hold the pose, you will feel a gentle stretch in your back and hips, releasing tension.

Cat & Cow Poses (Marjaryasana & Bitilasana): These poses can be done separately, but when you put them together you get a relaxing Vinyasa (where you combine or arrange moves in a certain way, often associated with flow) routine. The stretch from these poses releases strain on your neck, back, shoulders, and more. Alternating these poses in time with your breath can help stimulate your organs and stretch your muscles.

Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose (Viparita Karani): This pose will help refresh your blood flow as you position your body in this uncommon angle. With your feet against the wall and your back on the floor, you create a 90-degree angle with your body and allow a restful effect on your mind.
